A Simulink Real-Time Testing Solution for Power Electronics and Motor Control


Learn how you can go beyond software-only simulation to quickly and efficiently test your Simulink control designs in real-time while connecting to hardware. We’ll look closely at a brushless motor control example and demonstrate, using an xPC Target Turnkey solution, how a controls or test engineer can easily configure and run the controller algorithm on a real-time target machine and communicate through high-speed I/O interfaces to power electronics, sensors, and the motor.

Highlights include:

  • Designing a motor control system with Simulink and SimPowerSystems
  • Introduction to real-time testing
  • Introduction to xPC Target and xPC Target Turnkey
  • Using FPGA-based I/O modules for high-speed interfacing: PWM generation, synchronized current measurements, and quadrature signal decoding
  • Real-time demonstration using a brushless motor

About the Presenter: Paul Cox is an application engineer in MathWorks’ Paris office, specializing in the use of Simulink with target hardware by way of automatic C-code generation technology. Before joining MathWorks, Paul obtained his masters degree in control systems at INSA Toulouse. Paul has also worked in the embedded systems world as a developer and application engineer at Logic PD. He holds a BSEE from UT Austin.
